Zhang (65) leads by two at LPGA Malaysia tournament

KUALA LUMPUR, Malaysia – Thailand’s Jasmine Suwannapura made seven birdies and one eagle to take the lead in the first round with a 9-under 63 at the LPGA Maybank Championship held at the Kuala Lumpur Golf and Country Club on Thursday.

Australian Hannah Green, winner of the 2019 Women’s PGA Championship, shot a 64 and was one stroke behind. Australian Grace Kim and Americans Rose Chan and Gina Kim also tied for third with a 65, two strokes behind.

Norway’s Emily Christine Pedersen and Mexico’s Gaby Lopez were among the players who posted 66s, three strokes behind, at the tournament, which will be held for the first time in Malaysia.

The game was suspended later in the day due to a rainstorm. Around 25 players had no choice but to stop the round as none of them were in danger of taking the lead.

This is the third of four LPGA events on the tour’s Asian Swing. Australia’s Minjee Lee won in a playoff against South Korea last week, and the final tournament will be the TOTO Classic, which will be held in Japan next week. Lee will not play in Malaysia this week.
