India vs Malaysia soccer, Merdeka Cup 2023 semi-finals, results and scores

India responded quickly with a well-worked team goal. Lalianzuala Chhangte’s cross from the right was deflected back by Sahar Abdul Samad and Naorem Mahesh Singh volleyed home, but it was too good for Malaysian goalkeeper Sihan Hazmi.

Malaysia were awarded a penalty in the 18th minute when India’s Nikhil Poojary pushed Darren Lock inside the box. Arif Ayman took the spot kick to make it 2-1.

Both teams had plenty of chances to add points to their scoresheets, but Malaysia scored their third goal just before half-time. Faisal Halim brushed aside the Indian defense and beat Gurpreet Singh Sandhu in a one-on-one situation.

India dominated the first half with 55% possession, but had few shots on goal.

The Indian soccer team gave it their all in the second half. Sunil Chhetri scored his 93rd international goal after taking advantage of a square pass from Lalianzuala Chhangte.

Larianzuala Chhangte was once again in the thick of the action. In the 56th minute, his shot from a poor angle beat the Malaysian goalkeeper. However, the referee ruled that the ball had been cleared by a Malaysian defender and did not cross the goal line, and the goal was disallowed.

India’s attack improved significantly in the second half, but it was still difficult for the defense to contain Faisal Halim, who assisted Malaysia’s fourth goal, and others. Faisal Halim’s precise pass found Ravel Corbin-Ong in the center of the box, who scored the goal to make it 4-2.

A few minutes later, Larianzuala Chhangte tried to pull one back, but his shot hit the crossbar. India felt threatened every time they launched an attack. However, the final whistle rang with the score unchanged.

Malaysia will face Tajikistan in the final of the Merdeka Cup, also known as Pestabora Merdeka, on Tuesday. The Merdeka Cup is an international friendly soccer tournament held in Malaysia to celebrate Malaysia’s Independence Day.

Meanwhile, India will continue preparations for next month’s FIFA World Cup qualifiers. India will play Kuwait in an away game and face Qatar in Bhubaneswar.
