Malaysia Open: Indian badminton duo Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty lose in final to Liang Weiken and Wang Zhang

India’s Satwiksairaj Rankireddy and Chirag Shetty defeated China’s Liang Weiken and Wang Zhang 21-9, 18- in the Malaysia Open 2024 men’s doubles final here on Sunday. 21, lost 17-21.

Satwik Chirag started the battle for the last spot on a high note with an aggressive display of badminton. He took an 11-4 lead into the break after he exploited holes in China’s defense and turned the momentum to his side.

At the restart, the Indian pair continued their sustained efforts, while the Chinese pair’s unforced errors gave them the edge over their rivals. The first match lasted just 13 minutes and the Indian pair took a 1-0 lead in the final.

As expected, China’s reaction came in the second game. Ken and Chan looked determined before the break, holding a five-point lead over their rivals. After the restart, Satwik-Chirag confidently took the points and reduced the gap to just one point at 19-18.

However, the Chinese pair managed to win the second game, bringing the final match to a decider.

The Indian pair made their intentions clear early in the deciding match with powerful smashes, with Satwik repeating the same smash from his stable. The Asian Games gold medalist took a hot shot and took a 10-3 lead.

Ken and Chan jumped up with burning hunger, extending their score to par 12 and taking the lead at 14-13. From there, the match was fought and was decided in less than two hours.

It was the fourth loss in five matches for the Indian pair against the Chinese pair. Performance at the Malaysian Open will count toward a player’s qualification ranking for the 2024 Paris Olympics.
