Batu Caves, a prominent Malaysian tourist destination cherished as a sacred site by Hindu worshipers and known for hosting the annual Thaipusam festival, is set to undergo an innovative upgrade. Batu Caves, an iconic site known for its 272 steps leading up to the temple shrine and caves, is currently preparing to increase its accessibility with the installation of escalators.

Improved Batu Caves accessibility

Located 12.2 km from Kuala Lumpur, the Batu Caves dazzle visitors with their towering, Instagram-favorite rainbow-colored staircases. Today, the only way to reach the shrine, which is surrounded by limestone caves, is to climb 272 steps. Recognizing the need to improve accessibility, administrators are planning to introduce escalators to reach the Batu Caves temples. According to the newspaper’s report, temple committee chairman R. Nadarajah said, “We hope for government support as this escalator will enable disabled and elderly people who are unable to climb stairs to reach the main temple. ” CNN Philippines.

In addition to the escalator, a multi-purpose hall worth approximately MYR 35 million (approximately USD 7.5 million) will be constructed on the Batu Caves grounds after the Thaipusam festival on January 25, 2024. The cost of the escalator has not been disclosed at this time.
