Rose Chan scores LPGA career-low 65 in Malaysia, just two spots behind

Rose Chan posted her worst round of the LPGA season, a 7-under 65, falling two spots short at the inaugural Maybank Championship at Kuala Lumpur Golf & Country Club in Malaysia. Thailand’s Jasmine Suvarnapura led the field with 63 points in the first innings, followed by Australia’s Hannah Green with 64 points.

The first round of Maybank was suspended at 1:53pm local time due to dangerous weather conditions and resumed at 5:41pm, 3 hours and 48 minutes late. As a result of the delay, eight groups had to finish their round. Zhang was not one of them.

“I’m very happy,” Chan said. “Especially going into the last hole, I knew I was close.”

Chan hasn’t broken into the top 20 since Amundievian in July, but holds a share of third place with fellow rookie winner Grace Kim, Lynn Grant, Gina Kim and Pei-Yun Qian.

Starting on the back nine, Suvarnapura had birdie, eagle and birdie from Nos. 13 to 15 to take the lead early Thursday. One of four players to eagle the drivable par-4 14th, Suvarnapura hit every fairway and missed just two greens for a bogey-free 63.

“I feel like I need to hit it straight here,” said the 30-year-old LPGA veteran. “Every shot, even if it’s a par 5, you either go for it or lay it up. It’s so narrow that everything has to be perfect to have a chance at birdie.”

Six Malaysian players competed this week, with Epson Tour graduate Natasha Andrea Ng finishing last in the group with a round of 2-under 70.

“I played with Lydia (Ko) and Hannah (Green) today. I really admired college golf, growing up, junior golf,” Orn said. “It was surreal in a way for me because I really adored Lydia…To tee off in my home country and have so much support and everyone cheering me on was surreal in a way. It was real. I felt like a celebrity and it was really cool. I had a great time.”

Kelly Tan of Malaysia celebrated her 30th birthday with a 71, including a chip-in on the fourth hole.
