MANILA, Philippines – The Philippines drew Malaysia with methodical precision on Tuesday afternoon to make a successful SEA Games redemption bid.

Gilas Pilipinas used a balanced attack and impressive defensive performance to defeat their opponents 94-49 at Molodok Techo Stadium in Phnom Penh, Cambodia.

Brandon Ganuelas Rosser led all Filipino players with 13 points. Meanwhile, youngster Michael Phillips had nine points, a game-high 14 rebounds, five steals and two blocks in his varsity debut.

Naturalized player Justin Brownlee was expected to play a large role in this tournament, but he didn’t need to score much as five other Filipino players finished with at least eight points. He scored his 11 points in that effort.

Everyone else scored, except defensive master and team captain Chris Ross.

Yi Hou Wong led Malaysia with 15 points off the bench, while Shan Fu Oi and captain Chun Hong Ting both finished with seven points.

Next up after the Philippines is Cambodia, and it is reported that many naturalized athletes are participating in this contest. The two will fight at the same venue on Thursday at 6pm (Manila time).

The hosts showed a glimpse of just how capable their naturalized players are in the gold medal match against the Philippines in a 3×3 contest that relied heavily on Darin Dorsey, Brandon Peterson and Syed Pridget. The American trio is expected to play in the 5-on-5 showcase.

Gilas’ victory on Tuesday was three points better than their 87-44 win over Malaysia at the last SEA Games.
