Malaysia has been offered British pounds (US$128 million) to help host the 2026 Commonwealth Games, the country’s Olympic Council announced.

The Olympics will be held in two years’ time, but there is currently no official host after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew last summer.

“The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) has offered Malaysia the opportunity to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games on behalf of Victoria,” said a statement on the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) website. Said.

“This offer includes a significant financial investment of GBP 100 million to support local delivery and legacy planning for the 2026 edition.”

OCM said in a statement that it received a “formal invitation” from CGF to host the event last month.

“Following a formal invitation from the CGF to the Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM), OCM has begun discussions with the Malaysian Ministry of Youth and Sports regarding the possibility of hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games following the withdrawal of last year’s winning candidate Victoria. ,” the paper said. “With existing world-class facilities, Malaysia is well-equipped to host Commonwealth-wide international events involving 74 Commonwealth countries and territories.

“It requires minimal government expenditure and brings significant socio-economic benefits to the country.

“It will also improve the standard of sports in Malaysia, just as it did immediately after the 1998 Olympics. To achieve this objective, CGF and CGA Malaysia have presented an attractive proposal to the Malaysian government.”

A CGF spokesperson stopped short of confirming a “formal invitation” but confirmed Malaysia was interested in potentially hosting the Games in 2026.

“Malaysia has an excellent track record in hosting sporting events, with the 1998 Commonwealth Games in Kuala Lumpur being a huge success,” the spokesperson said.

“We were encouraged by their initial concept to build this heritage site using many of the same world-class facilities.”

The CGF is in “highly confidential discussions with potential host countries”, with any host country set to benefit from the GBP 100 million in financial and strategic support available through the Victorian Withdrawal Settlement. He added that it would be.
