Bernama – CGF offers Malaysia to host 2026 Commonwealth Games

KUALA LUMPUR, March 11 (Bernama) — Malaysia has been offered the opportunity by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) to replace Australia’s Victoria to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The Olympic Council of Malaysia (OCM) said in a statement today that the proposal includes a significant financial investment of GBP 100 million (approximately RM 601 million) to support local distribution and legacy planning for the 2026 Games. He said that

“Last month, we received a formal invitation from the CGF to OCM, also known as the Malaysian Commonwealth Games Association (CGA), and OCM has been in discussions with the Malaysian Ministry of Youth and Sports regarding the possibility of hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games after the withdrawal. “We have started discussions. Last year’s successful bidder was the Australian state of Victoria.”

OCM Chairman Tan Sri Mohamad Norza Zakaria said in a statement that CGA Malaysia is of the opinion that the government should consider this once-in-a-lifetime opportunity and the associated support and financial investment to build on its success. He was reported to have said that. He founded Kuala Lumpur in 1998 and put Malaysia back on the world sports map.

Mohamad Norza said that with existing world-class facilities, Malaysia is well-equipped to host Commonwealth-sized international events involving 74 Commonwealth countries and territories.

Rest assured, Mohammad Norza said the event would require minimal government expenditure and would bring significant socio-economic benefits to the country.

“Similar to the aftermath of the 1998 Olympics, the standard of sports in Malaysia will also improve,” he said.

Last Saturday, Youth and Sports Minister Hannah Yeoh said a decision on whether Malaysia is interested in hosting the 2026 Commonwealth Games will be taken by the Cabinet soon.

Mr Hanna said his ministry was preparing a cabinet paper for the cabinet summarizing research findings on various aspects of sports organization.

The Australian state of Victoria, which was scheduled to host the 23rd edition of the Games, withdrew in July last year due to an increase in hosting costs from the originally expected 2.6 billion Australian dollars (approximately 800 million ringgit). The fate of the Commonwealth Games remains in doubt. 09 billion) to A$7 billion (approximately RM21.78 billion).

The Victorian government has also reportedly agreed to pay A$380 million in breach of contract for failing to hold the Games as scheduled from March 17 to 29, 2026.

Malaysia became the first country in Asia to host the Commonwealth Games in 1998. In 2010, the quadrennial games returned to the region and were held in India.
