Malaysian snubs cast doubt on 2026 Commonwealth Games

Malaysia has rejected an offer to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games, citing uncertainty over the economic impact and a lack of funding provided to host the games.

Malaysia’s Sports Ministry made the announcement on Friday, marking a major setback for the quadrennial multi-sport event.

Malaysia was asked to take over after the Australian state of Victoria withdrew from hosting the tournament due to rising costs.

The Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) had provided Malaysia with 100 million pounds (A$193.54 million) in support funding.

Malaysia’s abdication raises the possibility that the Olympics will not be held for the first time since they were canceled due to World War II.

Officials said the funding provided was not sufficient and Malaysia could not commit to hosting the event on such short notice, giving it little time to assess the potential economic impact. .

Government Spokesperson and Communications Minister Fahmi Fazil said on Friday: “If we had more time, we would definitely do that, but we absolutely cannot do that because time is so short.”

“When we assessed the possibility of hosting the Olympics, we found that the time period and costs involved were particularly prohibitive.”

The issue had received mixed reactions in Malaysia amid concerns over expense costs and lack of preparation time.

Games are typically contested by around 70 countries and territories of the former British Empire.

The latest medal standings are: Australia, England, Canada,India, new zealand and South Africa.

Victoria’s withdrawal has already raised questions about the future of the tournament, including whether the tournament’s roots in colonial times still have relevance in modern times and its place in an already crowded global sporting calendar. A question arose.

In recent years, the Olympics have struggled to find willing hosts, with five of the past six held in Australia or Britain.

The UK city of Birmingham, which was due to host the event in 2026, stepped in to save the 2022 Games after South Africa was stripped of its hosting rights due to delays in preparations.

Birmingham’s decision to host the event in 2022 leaves the CGF scrambling to find another venue for 2026.

Victoria was the only viable candidate after several other cities withdrew from the bidding process due to cost.
