Imprisonment and fine for cosmetics theft

Kuching: An Indonesian woman was today sentenced to two months’ imprisonment and a RM100 fine by a magistrate court here for stealing a bottle of cosmetics worth RM73.50.

Mariati, 58, admitted the charge under Article 380 of the Penal Code, which was read out in front of Zubaydah Sharkawi.

She allegedly committed the crime at around 4.51pm on February 1 this year at a Health and Beauty Care Pharmacy located at a prominent shopping center in Jalan Simpang Tiga here.

Zubaydah ordered the defendant to serve one month in prison if he did not pay the fine.

According to the facts of the case, the complainant, who was the manager of the store, checked the surveillance camera footage and found the defendant opening the cosmetics packaging.

The accused took the products through the security control system at the building’s main gate without paying.

As a result of this incident, the facility suffered a loss of RM73.50.

Police were alerted to take further action and the suspect was arrested on February 3.

As a result of the investigation, it was determined that the defendant had stolen the cosmetics based on surveillance camera footage and testimony from witnesses who witnessed the crime.

The case was prosecuted by prosecutor Nur Shafiqa Nyaie Ilin, but the defendant was not represented by a lawyer.
