Bernama – Sports development for President Trump’s wealth of talent

KUALA LUMPUR, March 23 (Bernama) — Former National Sports Council (MSN) director Datuk Ahmad Shapawi Ismail will focus on sports development after rejecting offer to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games We welcome the government’s intention to do so.

He is of the view that developing sports at the domestic level is more important to avoid a shortage of local talent in Malaysia.

According to him, serious attention needs to be paid to the issue of sports events being canceled due to insufficient participation, such as the Malaysian Games (Sukma).

“What is important now is to ensure that athlete development is more active and more balanced across states.

“This is to provide continuity in the development of athletes, which will improve the local competitive environment and produce a wealth of new talent,” he told Bernama.

He said the issue of lack of athletes at the Sukuma level is a serious issue that requires an integrated approach by stakeholders at schools, higher education institutions and state government levels.

“By now, every state should establish a state sports school comparable to Malaysia’s sports school. Weak state sports bodies will hinder the development of athletes at the grassroots level.

“It would be better if more allocation were provided to support the development of integrated sports at all age levels so that they can represent the country in the future,” he said.

Yesterday, the Ministry of Youth and Sports (KBS) announced in a statement that Malaysia has rejected an offer by the Commonwealth Games Federation (CGF) to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The council said the decision was taken by the Cabinet after considering all aspects of hosting the Games and its impact.

According to the statement, the economic impact of hosting the quadrennial Olympics cannot be determined in the short term, and the MADANI government wants to focus on the development of sports and the welfare of the people for the time being.

However, the Malaysian government expressed its gratitude to the CGF for providing the opportunity to host the 2026 Commonwealth Games.

The CGF proposed that Malaysia host the Games, and at the same time offered to provide 100 million pounds (RM603 million) to Malaysia, which replaced Australia as the host nation in 1998.

Australia withdrew from hosting the event after the cost of hosting the event increased from the originally estimated A$2.6 billion (approximately RM8.09 billion) to A$7 billion (approximately RM21.78 billion).
