Good Samaritan thwarts attempted handbag snatching, arrests suspect

padawan: An attempt by two men to snatch an elderly woman’s handbag in Taman Desa Wira, Batu Kawa on Monday (April 22) is thwarted by the swift and selfless actions of road users. It was very successful.

The incident went viral on social media after a minute of dashcam footage depicting the crime, which occurred around 7:55 a.m.

In the footage, one of the assailants can be seen struggling with the victim’s handbag on the roadside, while the other appears to be trying to quickly flee on a motorbike.

In response to the incident, two vehicles suddenly stopped the suspect’s motorcycle, preventing him from fleeing. Several members of the public got out of their cars and tried to catch the thief.

One suspect was arrested by members of the public, while the other reportedly fled the scene.

Members of the public were able to hand over the arrested suspect and motorcycle to the police for further action.

When contacted, Padawan Police Chief DSP Lim Jo Siong confirmed the incident and said it was still under investigation.

“The victim, who is in his late 50s, suffered only minor cuts and abrasions during the incident, and was not seriously injured.

“Upon investigation, both suspects were identified as local residents in their 20s and the suspects were detained in furtherance of the investigation and will remain in custody.

“Efforts are continuing to locate and arrest the other suspect, who remains at large,” he said.

The case is being investigated under Article 394 of the Penal Code for voluntarily causing bodily harm while committing robbery.

DSP Lim also thanked the community for their swift and heroic actions in preventing crime and said they welcome any information to assist police in this case.
