At least 16 dead, 28 missing after migrant boat capsizes off Djibouti

At least 16 people have died and 28 are missing after a boat carrying migrants capsized off the coast of Djibouti, the International Organization for Migration said Tuesday.

In a post on the ‘X’ platform, the group said: “A tragedy occurred when a boat carrying 77 migrants, including children, capsized off the coast of Djibouti. At least 28 people are missing and 16 have died,” he said, without specifying the date of the incident.

He added that the local branch of the International Organization for Migration is “assisting local authorities with search and rescue operations.”

The accident is the latest in a series of fatal accidents along the so-called “Eastern Migration Route.”

Another boat carrying more than 60 people sank off the coast of Gudoria in northeastern Djibouti on April 8, according to the International Organization for Migration and the Ethiopian embassy in Djibouti.

The International Organization for Migration said at the time that the bodies of 38 migrants, including children, had been found and six people were missing.

The embassy in Djibouti said the ship was carrying Ethiopian migrants from Djibouti to Yemen.
