Polygon and Immutable Team Up On Gaming Focused zkEVM

Polygon and Immutable, two of Ethereum’s top scaling teams, are collaborating to launch an Ethereum-compatible rollup powered by zero-knowledge proofs designed to support Web3 games.

Immutable zkEVM, an upcoming Layer 2 solution, combines Polygon’s zkEVM technology with Immutable’s gaming-focused blockchain architecture. According to Polygon, both teams plan to release Immutable zkEVM “in the coming months.”

This news comes as the zkEVM rollup promises to disrupt and expand Ethereum’s Layer 2 (L2) scaling ecosystem.

Rollups work by bundling transactions at layer 2 and sending them in batches to the Ethereum mainnet for final processing, enabling faster and cheaper transactions. The most popular L2 is Optimistic Rollup, which has high compatibility with Ethereum’s core smart contract engine, the Ethereum Virtual Machine, but requires a 7-day delay on withdrawals to detect fraud. is required.

In contrast, rollups protected by zero-knowledge proofs typically provide higher privacy and faster finalization at the expense of EVM compatibility. This means that developers cannot easily port their code from mainnet to L2 without making significant changes.

However, zkEVM solutions claim full compatibility with EVM, and some analysts predict that zkEVM could come to dominate the L2 sector.

Polygon plans to unveil zkEVM on March 27th, while rival teams Matter Labs, Scroll, and Consensys are preparing to unveil their own zkEVMs in the coming months.
