Australia: Rescuers rush to drive stranded whale back into the ocean

Approximately 160 pilot whales washed ashore on the coast of Dunsborough, 285 kilometers south of Perth in western Australia. According to Southwest Parks and Wildlife Service (PWS), 28 whales died.

Pia Courtis from PWS said in a statement that while many rescue agencies are working to help, “unfortunately the outcome after pilot whales beach themselves is generally poor.”

She said there are two other whale pods, one made up of 20 whales and another made up of 100 whales, that could also reach the coastline. she added.

Members of the public are advised not to attempt to rescue the whales on their own, and operations are still ongoing.
