Deputy Minister strives to realize Durin’s waterfront dream

Shiv: Deputy Transport Minister Datuk Henry Harry Jinep was committed to helping Durin residents realize their dream of having their own waterfront.

He expressed his intention to work with the Sibu Rural District Council (SRDC), chaired by MP Semprai Petrus Ngerai, to develop a proposal for the waterfront project.

Mr Henry said having a waterfront area was synonymous with towns and cities with rivers, such as Durin town, adding that many were built in towns such as Selangau and Kanowit.

Henry gives a speech.

“I discussed it with SRDC chairperson Councilor Semprai Petrus Ngerai to prepare the proposal.I then spoke to Dudong City Councilor Datuk Seri Tiong King Singh as this area is under his jurisdiction. I plan to discuss it with you.”

“He intends to make a proposal to the Sarawak state government for allocation for the Durin waterfront development. Although I do not have the authority to approve this proposal, I would like to work with SRDC to help realize this dream. I will submit a proposal (to Mr. Tiong),” said Mr. Henry, who is also a member of Tasik Bir City Council.

He said this in his speech at the opening ceremony of Symphoni Batang Rajang, co-organized with Carnival Kevdayan Durin (KKD) at Durin Bazaar here last night (April 27).

Mr Henry stressed the need to finalize the proposal before the next State Assembly (DUN) to present it to Sarawak Chief Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg.

He promised to discuss with the Sarawak Rivers Board (SRB) the proposal from organizing committee chairman Datuk Teo Boon Siew to establish a power boating platform in Durin.

“I have discussed with SRB controllers how we can support the construction of a pier for next year’s rowing competitions, similar to a pontoon that will serve as a platform for remote-controlled boats,” he added.

Henry also presided over a ribbon-cutting ceremony to mark the completion of the roof installation on the riverfront pier in Durin. At this ceremony, he was presented with the RM30,000 funds allocated during his visit to inspect the pier last year.

This year’s KKD and Symphoni Batang Rajang will be held jointly and the Symphoni Batang Rajang night was scheduled for April 27 from 6pm to midnight. There will be concerts by Tambunesia, an international sape artist from Indonesia, and local sape artists such as Matthew Gau, Jerry Kamit, Kurnan Magat and Qemada Group.

KKD held a variety of activities over three days from April 26th to 28th, including a remote control boat competition and a sepak takraw competition.

Also present were Bawang Assan City Councilor Datuk Seri Wong Sun Ko, SRB controller Lieutenant Colonel Dinh Tiu Wong (MP), SRDC secretary Ng Siang Wei, and Henry’s wife Datin Kristina. Mr. Ethni Mead also attended.
