Educational autonomy is essential for Sarawak

Mr Fadila said the lack of autonomy has led to education problems in the state, especially as many education posts remain vacant as educators from the peninsula refuse to transfer to the state, leading to a shortage of teachers working in Sarawak. He said this is causing challenges in dealing with the situation.

Kuching: Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Fadillah Yusof established the Ministry of Education, Innovation and Human Resource Development (MEITD) to encourage Sarawak to collaborate with the Malaysian Ministry of Education (MoE) to resolve education-related challenges. said. But he said the issue falls under the jurisdiction of the federal government, so the province would need to go through the Department of Environment to take immediate action.

“At the state level, MEITD plays an important intermediary role in addressing education issues. Education remains a big challenge for us and a key agenda item within the Malaysia Agreement 1963 (MA63). “Giving administrative powers to the education sector is the main focus of the federal government through the MA63 Secretariat,” he said. He said the lack of autonomy has led to education problems in the state, especially the shortage of teachers working in Sarawak as many education posts are vacant as educators from Sarawak have refused to transfer to the state. He said that this poses challenges in dealing with the situation.

He said giving Sarawak administrative powers over education would ensure a steady supply of teachers in the state. “It will ensure that these vacancies are filled and candidates are available to work in Sarawak, thereby ensuring a steady supply of talent.”
