Billy Vunipola: England and Saracens number eight fined after arrest in Spain

England number eight Billy Vunipola was arrested and fined 240 euros (about 25,000 yen) following an incident in Mallorca on Sunday.

BBC Sport understands that the 31-year-old was Tasered by police in the Spanish island’s capital Palma in the early hours of Sunday and has since been charged with “resisting the law”.

The police investigation has now concluded, but Vunipola’s club Saracens said they would deal with the matter “internally”.

Vunipola described the incident as an “unfortunate misunderstanding” and said he would cooperate with Saracens’ internal investigation.

“Contrary to media reports, there was no violence, there was no fighting, and at no stage did I threaten anyone with a bottle, a chair, etc.,” Vunipola said.

Vunipola paid the fine and said he would “sincerely apologize” to those involved.

He is scheduled to return to the UK on Monday.

Vunipola has made 75 appearances for England, his last cap coming in the 2023 World Cup semi-final defeat to South Africa.

The former Wasps number eight came on as a substitute in the second half of Saracens’ 15-12 win over Bath on Friday night.

Saracens, second in the Gallagher Premiership, are not scheduled to play again until May 11 when they face Bristol.
