South China Sea: Philippine ship BBC hit by Chinese water cannon

The BBC’s Southeast Asia correspondent Jonathan Head was on board a Philippine Coast Guard vessel targeted by a Chinese ship in the South China Sea this morning.

Our reporter explained that the Chinese were spraying water over the ship’s bow and that it was being tailed by at least three different Chinese ships.

He and all other passengers were uninjured. But such aggressive confrontations have become more common in the disputed waters over the past year. Both China and the Philippines claim the waters near Scarborough Shoal.

The Philippine government, led by President Marcos Jr., has also increased patrols in these waters to counter Chinese dominance.
