Kuching: The upcoming Performing Arts Center will serve not only as a platform for local talent, but also as an international hub for creative talent.

Prime Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg said the center will be equipped with state-of-the-art facilities to attract international artists to perform in the state.

“If you look at what’s happening in Singapore, they have a deal with Taylor Swift that gives artists special incentives.

“If she performs in Singapore, all her fans will follow. This will bring high benefits in terms of cultural value, in addition to economic benefits.

“We want to do the same thing, but if the performing arts center is in poor condition, who will come? So it’s extremely important that the performing arts center meets certain standards,” he said.

He said this while addressing reporters after the inauguration and handover ceremony of the performing arts center project site at the old DUN building here yesterday.

Abang Johari also expressed confidence that the establishment of the center will strengthen Sarawak’s tourism industry.

He said with the establishment of Sarawak’s own airline, such infrastructure can promote and boost the state’s tourism and hospitality industry.

Meanwhile, in addition to bringing international artists here, he also wants to see various performances related to local legendary stories, such as the story of Lentap and Puteri Santubong .

“We can create attractions with performances related to history or things that are of interest to area enthusiasts,” he said.

The company then envisions a performing arts center that would mirror London’s famous Royal Albert Hall.
