Tether CEO Paolo Ardoino teases potential Pear Phone powered by P2P apps

Paolo Ardoino, CEO of Tether and co-founder of peer-to-peer platform HolePunch, recently hinted at plans to potentially develop a Pear Phone in the future.

Posted by Ardoino Floating The idea of building an Android compatible phone based on the Android Open Source Project (AOSP). The device comes pre-installed with Holepunch’s suite of peer-to-peer applications, including the Keet encrypted messaging app, other apps built on the Pear Runtime P2P protocol, and the Bitkit Bitcoin wallet developed by Synonym.

“Eventually we need to build a Pear phone. Android compatible (AOSP), Keet powered, Pear app, and bitkit wallet Preinstalled. The App Store will also be P2P. There are no Google apps by default. ”

In particular, Ardoino suggested that Pear Phone will not include Google apps by default. He also mentioned plans for a peer-to-peer app store for the device.

The concept builds on HolePunch’s mission to enable serverless, unstoppable P2P applications that promote user privacy and freedom from Big Tech platforms. Tether-backed Holepunch recently launched Pear Runtime, an open source protocol that allows developers to build their P2P apps without the cost of server infrastructure.

Pear Runtime powers Holepunch’s flagship Keet app, enabling fully encrypted video calling and messaging directly between devices without the use of a central server. Bitfinex, Hypercore, and Tether have teamed up to found Holepunch with the goal of “unlocking global communications and strengthening free speech.”

The Pear Phone concept is in line with Tether’s recent restructuring to expand its focus beyond being a stablecoin company. The company will drive innovation in AI, P2P platforms, financial inclusion, sustainable mining, blockchain education, and even biotechnology by creating new divisions such as Tether Data, Tether Finance, Tether Power, and Tether Edu. That’s what I’m aiming for. This multi-pronged approach allows Tether to leverage emerging technologies and shape the future of finance and technology. Potentially leveraging the extensive ecosystem of P2P apps and Tether, his Pear Phone could be a key part of this strategy to empower users and counter the dominance of Big Tech giants.

Although still just an idea at this stage, the potential Pear Phone could be an important step towards HolePunch and Tether’s vision of a decentralized, user-controlled mobile ecosystem. It remains to be seen if and when this project will come to fruition. But Ardoino’s tweet provides an interesting glimpse into how Tether’s profits and Holepunch’s P2P technology will combine into a freedom-focused smartphone.
