A team of scientists has discovered a new way to make batteries cheaper and more efficiently using small amounts of widely available doping elements such as aluminum and silicon.

The world relies heavily on lithium-ion batteries. Lithium-ion batteries are used not only for energy storage but also in cars and mobile phones. However, it faces many problems, including a high dependence on rare and expensive resources.

Scientists are therefore working to provide more efficient and sustainable materials for battery positive electrodes, the part where important electronic exchanges take place and where many problems occur.

Last year, scientists announced they had discovered a new highly efficient cathode material that works by exploiting the reaction between iron and oxygen. However, when a battery is charged or recharged, oxygen is produced.

The researchers now say that a “doping” process could overcome this problem, and a new technique could be useful.

“We found that by introducing small amounts of abundant elements such as aluminum, silicon, phosphorus, and sulfur into the crystal structure of the cathode, recyclability can be significantly improved,” said Hiroaki Kobayashi from Hokkaido University in Japan. .

These new ideas improve the battery’s stability and allow it to retain up to 90% of its charge.

“We hope to continue developing these new ideas and make a significant contribution to the advancement of battery technology, which will be essential if electricity replaces fossil fuels,” Kobayashi added.

The study, titled “Toward a cost-effective high-energy lithium-ion battery cathode,” was published in the journal ACS Materials Letters.
