Israeli military tells Palestinians to temporarily evacuate parts of Rafah ahead of expected attack

JERUSALEM (AP) — The Israeli military has instructed Palestinians to begin evacuation from eastern Rafah, according to an Israel Defense Forces statement on Monday, suggesting a ground invasion is imminent.

People were told to move to Mwasi, an Israeli-declared humanitarian zone near the coast. The military said it had extended assistance to the area, including field hospitals, tents, food and water.

The announcement came amid shaky ceasefire talks and ahead of a long-awaited ground offensive that Israel has promised for months to carry out to eliminate remaining Hamas militants.

Defense Minister Yoav Gallant insisted on Sunday that Hamas was not serious about the deal and warned that “strong operations will be carried out in Rafah in the near future.”

His comments came after Hamas attacked a key Israeli border point on Sunday to deliver aid, killing three soldiers.
