Adult film star Stormy Daniels has claimed that she had a sexual relationship with Donald Trump in 2006, which he denies, but in the run-up to the 2016 election, which Trump won. He claims he was paid to keep quiet about the incident.

But this case is not about Daniels, nor is it about hush money payments. The case centers on compensation that President Trump made to his former personal lawyer and “fixer” Michael Cohen.

Ms Cohen claims she was instructed to pay Ms Daniels $130,000 (£104,000) in exchange for her silence about her alleged affair with Mr Trump. Prosecutors described this as an attempt to “unlawfully influence” the 2016 election.

Paying hush money is not illegal. But the Manhattan District Attorney’s Office alleges that Mr. Trump committed a crime by improperly recording the money he paid Mr. Cohen for legal fees.

He is charged with a total of 34 counts of first-degree falsification of business records.

Trump, who is considered the likely Republican candidate for the 2024 election, is legally required to appear in court.

He has pleaded not guilty to all charges and maintains that the charges against him are not criminal.
