Malaysian Mission in Jakarta hosts “Taste of Malaysia” to promote cultural exchanges

JAKARTA, May 7 (Bernama) — The Mission of Malaysia to ASEAN in Jakarta held an event titled “Taste of Malaysia: Gastronomic Diplomacy” at the Malaysian Embassy Complex in Kuningan, South Jakarta.

The four-hour event, which ended at 8pm local time on Monday, was attended by 200 guests, including ASEAN diplomats, ASEAN Secretariat staff, and ambassadors from ASEAN external partner countries.

In his opening remarks, Ambassador Datuk Nur Isa Wong Mee Chu encouraged participants to try Malaysian cuisine for those who have not yet had the opportunity to visit Malaysia.

“This will be a bit of an introduction to Malaysia for those who plan to visit ASEAN more often next year, when Malaysia holds the chair in 2025,” she said.

Malaysian Ambassador Datuk Syed Mond Hasrin Tengku Hussin, embassy staff and members of the media also attended the event, which was aimed at strengthening ties and fostering friendships with colleagues.

Guests enjoyed nasi lemak (fragrant coconut rice), chicken rendang (chicken cooked in spices and coconut milk), Remang (sticky rice cooked in bamboo), fried kway teow (flat rice noodles).

Also includes other dishes Murtabak (fried roti-like flatbread stuffed with meat) Kui Ketayap (sweet coconut pancake roll), curry puff, chicken satay, Roti Hara (Malaysia Net Crepe), Teh Tariq.

Speaking to the media at the event, Noor Izzah believes food can be a great icebreaker and help people connect and share Malaysia’s warmth, hospitality and rich cultural diversity.

“Malaysian cuisine reflects these qualities and represents the friendliness of the Malaysian people and the diverse cultures that come together in our cuisine,” she said.

This is the first time that the Mission of Malaysia to ASEAN in Jakarta has organized this program under the name ‘Flavours of Malaysia’, and they hope to make it an annual event.

Noor Izzah added that using occasions such as National Day and Hari Raya celebrations to showcase Malaysian cuisine is a unique way to share culture and connect with others.
