Hong Kong loses Malaysian tourists to Thailand due to limited halal options

More than 90,000 Malaysian tourists visited Hong Kong in the first three months of this year, three times as many as in the same period last year.

Some Malaysian Muslims prefer to visit Thailand over Hong Kong because of limited halal-certified food options in the city, a lawmaker quoted a Malaysian tourism official as saying.

Lam said Hong Kong could adopt the government’s halal certification scheme sooner to attract more domestic and Middle Eastern tourists.

Lawrence Tang Fei said the official recognition scheme could also benefit Chinese Muslims in eight remote mainland cities newly covered by the personal visit scheme.
