Marriott Hotels opens first resort in Peninsular Malaysia

Marriott Hotels has announced that it will open its first resort in Malaysia’s Perhentian Islands.

Located on Pulau Perhentian Kecil in Terengganu, Perhentian Marriott Resort & Spa is surrounded by the breathtaking scenery of Perhentian Island Marine Park. The resort’s opening marks the flagship brand’s debut in Terengganu amid a serene tropical sanctuary and the allure of an unparalleled natural environment of marine biodiversity, pristine beaches, crystal clear waters and Malaysian tradition and cultural experiences.

The resort can be accessed by ferry from Kuala Besut Jetty, approximately an hour’s drive from Kota Bharu city.

“We are thrilled to open our first Marriott hotel in beautiful Terengganu on Malaysia’s east coast. The Perhentian Marriott Resort & Spa marks an important milestone in our expansion journey; not only is it the first Marriott hotel in the beautiful Perhentian Islands, but also the first Marriott hotel in Terengganu and the east coast of Malaysia,” said Ramesh Jackson, Regional Vice President, Malaysia and Indonesia, Marriott International.

“We are raising the bar in this part of Malaysia with thoughtful service that reflects Marriott Hotels’ tradition of great hospitality, sharing our quality experiences with the aim of making Perhentian and Terengganu a must-visit destination for both domestic and international travellers,” Jackson added.

Resort Design

Perhentian Marriott Resort & Spa is inspired by the charm of the South China Sea, coastal forests and unique traditions and culture. The design prioritizes sustainability by using local materials and natural landscapes and minimizing the impact on the environment.

A seamless transition between indoors and outdoors harmoniously blends the space into a sustainable yet poetic one. The décor reflects the traditional Songket weaving craft, with intricate motifs providing a visual contrast to the rustic walls and incorporating natural elements such as tree trunks and saplings.

Accommodation and Amenities

The resort offers 200 deluxe rooms and 17 villas with spectacular ocean views. Rooms follow the natural contours of the terrain, carefully positioned and angled to minimize impact on the land and ensure unobstructed views and privacy.

The resort features a fully equipped 24-hour fitness center and yoga deck, as well as 3 outdoor pools and a whirlpool with dechlorinated water. Qi Forest Spa & Wellness offers a variety of spa treatments, including traditional Malay massage. Club Penyu, a fun-filled kids’ and teens’ club for guests ages 3 to 17, offers educational activities on local culture, products and marine life.

Resort Attractions

Exploring Terengganu’s underwater beauty begins at the dive center, which is equipped with dedicated diving pools, dive boats and nitrox for diving. Excursions to the coral reefs and reefs will take you to amazing underwater features teeming with life, including reef fish, mollusks, barracudas, kingfish, blacktip reef sharks and nurse sharks. In July and August, you can spot dolphins and pilot whales.

Culinary adventures

Dapur, an all-day dining restaurant, serves local and international cuisine made with locally sourced ingredients, its signature bubbly breakfast concept is a mix of buffet and chef-curated a la carte menu, while Sekoci, a specialty restaurant, serves international cuisine while enjoying an al fresco lunch by the pool.

Dinner includes grilled seafood dishes, and the Great Room Bar & Lounge offers artisanal cocktails accompanied by beautiful views of the South China Sea.

“We are thrilled to welcome guests to Pulau Perhentian Kecil within Terengganu Marine Park, an island filled with natural beauty as well as local culture and traditions, offering a unique glimpse into Malaysia,” said Ann Busfield, general manager of Perhentian Marriott Resort & Spa. “Our commitment to exceptional service, combined with locally inspired contemporary design, will ensure all our guests experience the essence of great hospitality.”
