Malaysia wins two gold medals at Muay Thai World Championships

KUALA LUMPUR, June 12 (Bernama) – The national team won two gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze medal in the under-23 category at the World Muay Thai Championships, held in Patras, Greece from May 31 to Monday (June 10).

Female fighter Angie Yang Jia Chi, the 2023 World Cup and World Martial Arts Games Liyad 2023 champion, successfully defended her title in the Wai Kru Art category.

She performed brilliantly in the final, scoring 9.45 points to beat challenger Alyssa Kiley of the Philippines, who scored 9.40 points.

The other gold medal went to Ashraf Daniel Abdul Latif for his solo performance in the Men’s Wai Kru Art category after winning the Mai Muay Thai Duo category with Daris Muzamil Mahdi in the last tournament.

He scored 9.26 points to defeat Filipino contestant LJ Rafael Nasay (9.20 points) in the final.

Malaysia’s pair of Myra Alina Roslan and Jezebel Maiola won the silver medal in the women’s Maim Eduo Art category, while Damia Husna Ajian won silver in the women’s 48kg martial arts category.

Nur Amisha Azrilizal failed to defend her women’s 51kg title after losing 27-30 to Russian Olga Naumkina in the semi-finals and had to settle for the bronze medal.

Malaysian Muay Thai Association (PMM) president Datuk Muhammad Shahnaz Azmi was pleased that Malaysia, which sent eight athletes to the world championships, ranked 11th out of 93 countries competing.

“We are using this platform to promote the upcoming 2025 Southeast Asian Games in Thailand. This time, Muay Thai Malaysia did not field our team leader Rifdeen Masdol, who is injured and preparing for bouts at One Championship and other tournaments.”

“Each country’s representatives, along with all their athletes, were taken to Olympia, Greece, the birthplace of the Olympic Games. This is a symbolic gesture as Muay Thai will be a demonstration sport at next month’s Paris Olympics as a first effort towards introducing the sport into the Olympic Games in the future,” he said in a statement.
