Thousands around the world take part in International Yoga Day | Photo News

The 10th International Day of Yoga saw thousands of people around the world take part in mass sessions practising the ancient physical, mental and spiritual discipline that originated in India.

The United Nations declared June 21 as International Day of Yoga in December 2014 to raise global awareness about the benefits of practicing yoga.

India’s Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi led hundreds of participants in yoga in the Muslim-majority region of Kashmir on Friday.

Rain meant Modi’s speech was held indoors, but thousands of government employees, teachers and students from across Kashmir gathered for the event.

In other parts of the world, people came together to try out different yoga poses, meditate and practice breathing exercises.

This year’s theme is “Yoga for Self and Society” and focuses on harmony of the mind and body through a holistic approach to health and wellbeing.
