Malaysian youth thrash Timor-Leste 5-0 in ASEAN U-16 Championship

KUALA LUMPUR, June 23 (Bernama) — Malaysia’s under-16 (U-16) team kicked off their 2024 ASEAN U-16 Championship campaign with a bang, beating Timor-Leste 5-0 in their Group C opening match in Surakarta, Indonesia this evening.

Javier Jorda Rivera’s team took a 1-0 lead after 35 minutes thanks to a goal from Izzuddin Afif Nazaruddin before adding four more goals in the second half.

Mohammad Fahmi Noor Farizamal doubled the lead in the 55th minute, followed by goals from Mohammad Awal Wafi Ahmad Shukri (66th) and Alayan Hakim Norizam (78th) before Mohammad Awal capped off the scoring spree with his second in the 89th minute.

The U-16 national team will take on Australia at the same venue on Wednesday (July 26) before completing their group stage campaign against Thailand at Stadium Manahan on Saturday (July 29).

Earlier, in another Group C match, Thailand and Australia played out in a scoreless draw.

The group winners and best group runners-up will advance to the semi-finals on July 1st, while the third-place match and final are scheduled for July 3rd.
