FA Cup: JDT crushes University Malaysia 5-0 in quarter-final first leg

KUALA LUMPUR, June 29 (Bernama) — Defending champions Johor Darul Ta’zim (JDT) moved within a stone’s throw of the semi-finals after defeating League A1 side Malaysian University 5-0 in the first leg of the 2024/2025 FA Cup quarter-finals at the Sultan Ibrahim Stadium Iskandar Puteri (SSI) today.

Universiti Malaysia, who requested to host and play at JDT’s home ground, took an early lead in the second minute after left defender Loveill Lawrence Corbin Ong received a pass from Muhammad Shami Safari to score the opener.

Hector Pablo Vidrio’s team had a chance to double their tally from a free kick in the 38th minute, but midfielder Safik Rahim’s shot hit the post and was denied.

JDT continued to increase the pressure in the second half with foreign player Francisco de Oliveira Geraldes catching the eye with two goals in the 48th and 61st minutes respectively to add to the woes of coach Mohamed Farid Dewan’s side.

Defender Shahrul Mohamed Saad continued Southern Tigers’ goal spree with a header for the fourth 10 minutes later, while naturalised striker Romel Morales effortlessly tucked in Corbin Ong’s powerful strike from the left for the fifth in the 80th minute.

Universiti Malaysia failed to fulfil its dream of scoring at least one goal in the return match, also to be played at SSI on July 5, after winger Mohamed Alief Najmi Mohamed Raji’s 84th-minute goal was ruled out for offside, remaining in that position until the final whistle.

Meanwhile in Kuching, five-time FA Cup winners Selangor FC suffered a shock 1-2 defeat to Kuching City FC in the first leg of their FA Cup quarter-final today.

Selangor-born Chilean player Ronny Fernandes gave Selangor a bright start when he took advantage of some confusion in front of Kuching City’s goal to score the opener in the 31st minute.

Shocked by the goal, Kuching City launched a wave of attacks on the Red Giants’ fortress and equalised six minutes into first-half added time when goalkeeper Samuel Somerville mishandled the ball while trying to save striker Jordan Mintah’s header, and the loose ball was picked up by Nigerian defender James Okwosa to pick up the ball.

Minta then became the hero for his team when he exploited a lapse in concentration by Selangor defender Shalul Naseem Zulpakar and chested the ball to goalkeeper Somerville.

The Ghanaian striker sneakily picked up the ball before it reached Somerville and scored the winning goal in the 64th minute to give his team a 2-1 lead in the first leg.

A win for coach Aidil Syahrin Sahak’s side will certainly give the Sarawak side an advantage when they host Kuching City FC in the second leg of the quarter-final at MBPJ Stadium in Petaling Jaya on July 6.
