Gabon announces it has paid its arrears to the World Bank

In Gabon, the dispute between the World Bank and the government appears to have been resolved.

According to a press release from the Ministry of Accounting issued on Wednesday, the country paid over $17 million in arrears to the International Bank for Reconstruction and Development (IBRD9) on July 2.

The payment was made following a memo from the World Bank’s Vice President for West and Central Africa, Ousmane Diaganna, which was leaked on social networks, announcing the suspension of payments to Gabon due to an accumulation of arrears.

Libreville believes the delays were due to technical issues and claims it acted in good faith.

To reassure creditors, the ministry added that the Public Accounts General had cleared around 136 billion FCFA francs of debt in June alone.
