Britain is voting in a parliamentary general election that could fundamentally change the country’s politics. After 14 years in power and five years since a landslide victory under Boris Johnson, the centre-right Conservative Party is fighting to hold on to constituencies it has held for decades.

Opinion polls suggest the centre-left Labour Party will return to power, with its manifesto pledges including ending tax exemptions for private schools and nationalising most of the country’s railways.

But while some forecasts suggest Labour will win a large majority, this is increasingly moving away from a two-party contest, with the centrist Liberal Democrats, the Greens, Scottish and Welsh independence parties, as well as the far-right Reform UK Party, which is to the left of Labour, and pro-Palestinian candidates all hoping to win seats.

The Times will be watching to see whether Labour’s performance matches the magnitude of expectations and whether there are signs of further realignment in the coming days.
