Sarawak National Economic Development Corporation (TEGAS) chairman Datuk Leng Tarif Salleh said the businesses set up by entrepreneurs were the backbone of the state’s economy, boosting gross domestic product (GDP) and creating employment opportunities.

“The Sarawak state government has long recognised the importance of supporting and encouraging local entrepreneurs,” he said at the TEGAS Pre-Accelerator Bootcamp 2024 Demo Day at the TEGAS Digital Village here on Saturday (July 6).

“Through TEGAS, the government has established TEGAS Digital Villages and Digital Innovation Hubs in Kuching, Bintulu and Miri. These initiatives provide access to various programmes designed to accelerate the growth of early-stage start-ups and social enterprises in Sarawak,” he said.

Deputy Minister for Urban Planning, Land Management and the Environment, Leng, also said that TEGAS is on the right track in helping achieve the government’s vision of a thriving society by 2030 powered by data and innovation.

“To date, we have supported more than 200 local start-ups and social enterprises at the most crucial stages of their development through various acceleration programs.

“Our programs are designed to provide startups with the resources, mentorship and networking opportunities they need to succeed.

“Through our accelerator, we aim to foster innovation and help develop breakthrough technologies that will generate significant impact and growth,” he concluded.
