Malaysian Internet users excited about American tourist named “Malaysia”

In a video posted to TikTok on July 1, Malaysia opened up about her first trip to the Southeast Asian country and her reasons for going there.

The tourist said he was visiting Malaysia “because that’s my name”.

She was clearly excited to be there.

“So far, it’s been amazing. The people here are kind,” she said in the video, adding, “The food is so good and the culture is so welcoming and inviting.”

The 35-second video has gone viral on social media, garnering nearly 50,000 views. It is part of a series called “Perugi Mana Gogogo,” which asks tourists about their travel experiences in Malaysia.

Many netizens expressed excitement over her name.

“The name is so unique and her parents probably have an interesting backstory,” one commenter wrote.

“Her parents named her Malaysia because of the lovely memories they have of the country,” another wrote.

“Malaysia is a friendly country. We are very lucky to have you here,” commented another.

Malaysia is not the only country where people are given names.

Names that have been used include Ireland, America, India, Jordan, Georgia and Chad. of The Straits Times report.

According to the U.S. Social Security Administration website, the name “Malaysia” has consistently ranked among the top 1,000 most popular baby girl names in the United States since 2011.

In 2023, the name Malaysia ranks 776th in popularity in the United States.

Malaysia recorded about 29 million foreign tourists last year, making it Southeast Asia’s most popular travel destination.
