More than 4,000 applicants for Icon Wanita program

Kuching: The “Ikon Wanita” program, implemented through the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development, received more than 4,000 applications.

But Minister Nancy Shukri said only a small proportion of applicants had completed the application process as they had been trained on how to apply correctly.

“We have asked some participants to reapply and we now have over 50 qualified applicants.

“This is the first time this programme has been implemented so the ministry is eager to see the results.

“We are working towards having 100 successful applicants and that remains our goal,” she said.

She made the remarks after officiating at the Malaysian Autism Swimming Festival (MASF), organised by the Hawally Sports Centre in collaboration with the Ministry of Women, Family and Community Development, here today (July 6).

Nancy said the ministry was guiding applicants to ensure they met the necessary criteria.

She said the selected candidates would later consult with a committee that would assess their interests and potential impact on society.

“The committee will assess how they can impact the people and contribute to the nation,” she added.

She also said the program is expected to be completed by this month, or no later than the third quarter of this year.

The initiative, announced by Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim on International Women’s Day (March 8), will provide RM50,000 in funding to support 100 women leaders.

The funding will act as a catalyst to amplify women’s ideas and contributions to increase women’s workforce participation through the Madani Economic Policy.
