Image of ‘Taj Mahal under construction’ generated by AI

An AI-generated image of a building surrounded by scaffolding has been repeatedly shared in social media posts that falsely claim to show India’s iconic Taj Mahal under construction in 1632. The Instagram user who first posted the photo says the image was created with a generative AI tool called Midjourney.

When you search for this keyword, Instagram Posts A post dated April 4, 2023, included several similar images of the dome-shaped structure under construction (Archive Link).

The Instagram post read, “A glimpse into the past! Captured during the construction of Shah Jahan’s incredible legacy, the Taj Mahal. Grateful to share these rare photographs and permission slips with you all.”

There was also a disclaimer that the images were created with Midjourney, a tool that generates images using language prompts.
