Christopher Large ready to resign if Malaysia fails to qualify for 2025 U-17 Asian Cup

KUALA LUMPUR, June 30 (Bernama) — Malaysia national U-16 team coach Christopher Large is ready to step down if Malaysia fails to qualify for the finals of the 2025 Asian Cup U-17 qualifiers to be held in Laos from Oct 19-26.

Christopher was confident that the young team would bounce back from the disappointment of failing to get past the group stage at the 2024 ASEAN Under-16 Tournament in Surakarta, Indonesia.

“Last year, the U-17 national team qualified for the 2023 Asian Cup U-17 tournament, so it is not impossible for them to achieve similar success.”

“However, if the team fails, I will step down and allow someone else to take over the responsibility of leading the national team to the highest level and continuing our mission to the World Cup,” he said in a statement today.

Christopher acknowledged that the failure in Indonesia was unacceptable but added that he takes full responsibility for the results and achievements of coach Javier Jorda Rivera’s boys.

Yesterday, Malaysia lost 1-3 to Thailand in their final Group C match, finishing third in the group with three points and failing to advance to the next stage (semi-finals).

The winners of each of the three groups and the best runner-up will advance to the semi-finals. Australia won Group C with seven points, the same as Thailand, but their average points were higher than Thailand, and Timor-Leste finished bottom of the group.

Malaysia started their ASEAN Cup campaign in style with a 5-0 win over Timor-Leste on June 23, but before yesterday’s result they lost 0-2 to Australia on Wednesday.

Malaysia last reached the semi-finals in 2019 when they beat Thailand 2-1 to win their group.

In the 2025 Asian Cup U-17 qualifiers, Malaysia will be drawn in Group H with Laos, the United Arab Emirates and Lebanon.

The 10 group winners and the top five runners-up will advance to the finals, which will be held in Saudi Arabia from April 3-20.
