Malaysia wins two gold medals at badminton camp

SURABAYA, July 2 (Bernama) — The Malaysian national badminton team brought home two gold medals for the Malaysian contingent at the ASEAN University Games (AUG) 2024 in Malang today.

The gold medal was won by domestic mixed doubles pair of Wee Yi Hean and Ng Chee Shuan, who defeated local pair of Elgifani Muhammad Huang and Jovita Elizabeth 21-17, 21-11 in the final at the Graha Chakrawala Convention Hall, University of Malang.

The second gold medal went to domestic men’s doubles pair Wong Tien Chi and Liu Shun, who defeated top-seeded Indonesian pair Erghifanj and Purnama Reza Duichaya 21-19, 21-10 in the final.

However, the country’s men’s singles player Hoei Shao Harn lost 10-21, 11-21 to Thai wrestler Pusri Nachakorn, settling for the silver medal.

The domestic women’s doubles team of Valerie Siow Zu Xuan and Lee Sin Jie also had to settle for the silver medal, losing 12-21, 13-21 to Thailand’s Atithaya Povanon and Chasinee Korepap.

Malaysia also won a bronze medal in the women’s singles through N Saranya, who beat compatriot Ng Yi Sin 21-10, 21-10 in the bronze medal match.

Meanwhile, national team head coach Datuk Abdul Rashid Mohamed Sidek said all the medals won today were a result of the determination and dedication shown by the players throughout the badminton tournament.

“On the final day we won two gold medals, two silver medals and one bronze medal, bringing our medal tally to two gold medals, three silver medals and two bronze medals overall.

“The players have shown great determination and fighting spirit for this AUG tournament,” he told reporters today.

Last Saturday, the women’s badminton team won the silver medal despite losing 0-3 to Thailand in the final, while the men’s national team beat Singapore 3-0 in the bronze medal match.
