MDS produces butter from gas

Kuching: Shell Middle Distillates Synthesis (MDS) has successfully produced food-grade butter from Gas-to-Liquids (GTL) Salawax.

Prime Minister Datuk Patinggi Tan Sri Abang Johari Tun Openg commended Shell MDS for the initiative and highlighted the potential of GTL technology to revolutionise various sectors, including food production.

He also highlighted the significance of this breakthrough as Shell MDS is producing the world’s first synthetic butter from gas.

“Achieving international certification can have a huge impact on the food industry.

“As the minister said, we are now producing fat from gas to make butter, which means there are lots of new products and technologies that will support gas-based industries,” he said.

He was speaking at Shell MDS Malaysia’s 30th anniversary event.Number Yesterday (July 10th) an anniversary dinner and event to celebrate the global launch of Shell GTL Microcrystalline Wax was held at the local Hilton Hotel.

Meanwhile, Shell Malaysia country chairman and senior vice president (upstream Malaysia) Siti Sulaiman said they have engaged Shell Livewire recipient and Kuching-based home baker Gombi Patisserie Sdn Bhd to test baking cookies using the butter.

She added that Shell MDS will continue to collaborate with industry experts and start-ups to push the boundaries of GTL innovation and expand into non-traditional applications such as the food industry.

“In terms of reducing carbon emissions, Savor in the US has successfully developed a recipe to produce butter entirely from GTL Sarawak.

“We believe this cutting-edge technology will be groundbreaking once it completes the necessary approval processes with major regulatory authorities,” she added.
