Malaysia and China strengthen cooperation in higher education field

KUALA LUMPUR, April 26 (Bernama) — Malaysia and China today announced various strategic initiatives to expand and strengthen cooperation in the field of higher education, in conjunction with celebrating the 50th anniversary of the establishment of Malaysia-China diplomatic relations. The Ministry of Higher Education (MOHE) said in a statement that the meeting was held in Putrajaya between Chinese Education Minister Huai Jinpeng and Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Dr Zambly Abd Kadir.

“Counterparts will look at the outlook and direction of higher education in their country, particularly in the field of technical and vocational education and training (TVET), and strategies in aspects such as socio-cultural and industrial cooperation for Malaysian students involving businesses. “We exchanged views on possible cooperation,” the statement read.

The discussion will also feature cooperation in advanced technology areas such as artificial intelligence, computing, green technology, microchips and automobiles.

According to the statement, the two ministers agreed that the establishment of national-level research centers in both countries would strengthen cooperation in related research fields.

It also encouraged strategic cooperation between Malaysian and Chinese higher education institutions in various science and technology development programs, resource sharing, technical data, facilities, training and research, and civilizational dialogue.

The statement said the signing of a memorandum of understanding (MoU) between the China Center for Academic Exchange Services (CSCSE) and the Malaysian Qualifications Authority (MQA) also took place during the meeting.

CSCSE and MQA will work together to facilitate the exchange of information and expertise on national qualification frameworks and accreditation processes, and to foster international cooperation in assessing qualifications and skills acquired through higher education.

“This partnership will further strengthen academic mobility programs and share research results and best practices in quality assurance in the higher education sectors in Kuala Lumpur and Beijing,” it added.
