KUALA LUMPUR, April 27 (Bernama) — The use of visual signaling devices (VSD) developed by Universiti Teknologi Malaysia (UTM) in collaboration with the Malaysian Sports Association for the Deaf (MSDeaf) can help improve the quality of competitions. Dr. Jaysman Puspanathan, deputy director of the UTM Sports Innovation and Technology Center (SITC), said the device will act as a signal light for participants in sports races to reach the starting line and depart.
“We use visuals to replace all sound systems and synchronize them with timers and photofinishing systems throughout the stadium.
“This tool is usually used at the international level and requires a large budget to rent, so we developed it ourselves in Malaysia,” he said at the National Sports Council (MSN) Mini Stadium here today. He spoke to reporters at the Deaf Sports Championships. .
Jaysuman explained that VSD devices can also replace previously used flag systems, as flag systems cannot be synchronized with timing systems.
Meanwhile, MSDeaf chairman Ong Sing Luen said the use of VSD would be beneficial to improving the quality of competition and also help deaf athletes receive visual signals during matches.
“The collaboration with UTM in the development of VSD technology is extremely important to assist visually impaired athletes, as previously they were using pistols reserved for ordinary athletes. cannot hear the pistol,” he said.
The National Deaf Sports Championships will see more than 111 deaf athletes from across the country participate in preparation for international competitions such as the 2024 Southeast Asian Deaf Games to be held in Jakarta. The 2024 Asia-Pacific Deaf Games will be held in Tehran and the 2025 Tokyo Deaflympics.
Meanwhile, Mr Ong has set a goal to increase the number of athletes participating in future International Deaf Sports Championships.
“We want to recruit more athletes to compete in Jakarta, Tehran and Tokyo. We also aim to win more gold medals in the upcoming Deaflympics,” he said.
Mr Ong added that MSDeaf is awaiting feedback from the Prime Minister’s Office and private companies to help raise funds to recruit more deaf athletes across the country.
Previously, the Malaysian delegation won two gold medals at the 2021 Deaflympics held in Brazil.
