Minister of Higher Education: Malaysia’s first AI faculty to be established on May 10th

PARIT, May 4 — The country’s first Artificial Intelligence (AI) department will open on May 10, said Higher Education Minister Datuk Seri Zambly Abdul Kadir.

He said the symbolic launch will be held at the World Trade Center Kuala Lumpur (WTCKL) and will be officiated by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim.

“At the initial stage, the Department of Artificial Intelligence started at UTM (University of Technology Malaysia) and there was also a consortium with other universities.

“However, at this early stage, we want to make this a truly high-quality department, with expertise from other universities coming on board to ensure the success of its establishment.” He said.

He said this while meeting reporters after presiding over the launch of the 2024 Jom Mask U (JMU) program at a branch of Mara Seri Iskandar University of Technology here today.

Zambry was previously reported to have said that the Higher Education Commission (JKPT) would first approve the AI ​​bachelor’s degree program in January, and that the program’s first cohort would start studying in October.

He identified AI development and curriculum to involve experts in the field of AI and meet the needs of industry in line with the National Artificial Intelligence Roadmap 2021-2025 launched by the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation (Mosti). said that it was done.

Meanwhile, Mr. Zambly said that JMU 2024 is an educational program offered by higher education institutions under the ministry, comprising public universities, private higher education institutions, polytechnics, community colleges, and the involvement of public skill training institutions (ILKA). He said the aim is to promote information. ).

He said JMU 2024 will be held from today until June 9 in 10 zones including Universiti Putra Malaysia, Universiti Kelantan Malaysia, UiTM branches in Sabah and Sarawak, and Universiti Malaysia Perlis. — Bernama
